What does a Pharmacist do?

Pharmacists work in a pharmacy and are qualified to recommend over-the-counter solutions for minor sickness. They give prescribed medicines either in hospital pharmacies or community pharmacies. They also work in the Pharmaceutical industry in pharmaceutical production or sales. Other areas where a pharmacist can work:

  • Primary care organizations

  • Universities in teaching and research

  • Pharmacy organizations

  • Military

  • Prisons

  • Veterinary pharmacy 

Research pharmacists develop and test new and old drugs for a variety of applications. Regulatory pharmacists develop drug standards and laws on production and distribution. 

Some work for health insurance companies, developing pharmacy benefit packages.

Responsibility of Pharmacists:

  • To check the quality of medicines before supplying them to patients

  • To suggest products like home healthcare supplies and medical equipment

  • To ensure that the supply of medicines is within the law

  • Some pharmacists check patients’ blood pressure, or

  • Some provide patients with their flu vaccination

  • Provide information on health topics like exercise, diet, etc.

  • They keep confidential records of patient’s drug therapies to avoid harmful drug interactions

  • To advise patients about medicines ( how to use or take them)

  • The correct dose of a drug

  •  positive or negative side-effects 

  • and answering patients' questions

Who can become Pharmacists?

Pharmacists have to deal with different people on a daily basis, so they should have excellent interpersonal skills. They should be able to work rapidly and accurately under pressure to ensure the medicine prescribed to patients is suitable.

Individuals who want to pursue this field of study should have-

  • ability to multitask

Qualification required to become Pharmacist


Eligibility Criteria:

  • For B.Pharma candidates should complete higher education from a recognized board

  • They must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology and English subjects. 

  • They must complete 17 years of age on December 31st of the year of admission.

  • Candidates should have completed a B. Pharm degree with minimum qualifying marks as required from a PG pharmacy college. 

  • For a doctorate in Pharmacy, candidates must have completed higher education from any state/national education board. 

  • They must have studied Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects with Mathematics or Biology as additional subjects. 

  • Candidates who have a diploma in pharmacy are also eligible for a doctorate program.

  • For Diploma in Pharmacy, candidates should have completed higher secondary education with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.

The selection process includes eligibility, score and rank in the entrance test to get into any Pharmacist College.
