What exactly does an Architect do?


The work of an Architect is basically to design buildings and other structures. Architects design both the interiors and exteriors of the buildings where we live, study, work, or shop. The design of the building should not only be attractive, but also it’s an architect’s responsibility to ensure a building is structurally safe, functional and there are different rules and regulations to follow to make a building safe and proper sized.


The first step is, the Architect and the client should discuss the basic sketch of the project about ideas like size, number of rooms, and mainly the budget of a client, here it is very important for an Architect to understand the client’s need.

The Architect will then draft a blueprint or drawing of his ideas, the architect’s now adopted computer-aided drafting or design (CADD), then present it to the clients to see if they like his concept and if they have any suggestions that they would like to get met. 

The Architect should then draw the final construction plan, which shows the building’s final appearance and details of the construction such as ventilation and electrical systems, etc.


The main reason why the candidates aspire to pursue an Architect career is, because of the liberty to work in comfortable environments, sometimes at home or an office to make up their designs. 

However, most of their time is spent going to their client’s office, or they will go to the construction site where their design is being built to monitor how things are running and to make sure they built it as he assigned.


Who can become an Architect?


One who wants to pursue an Architect career should know to balance needs such as safety vs. function vs. cost, with duties like supervising in every stage of the building process, from conception to construction.

As said earlier, an architect requires a wide range of abilities like strong math skills, an exceptional ability to communicate, and a keen eye for detail.


Here’s a 3 step process to becoming a licensed Architect


  • Education:

Earning an accredited Architecture degree [5-7 years].

  • Experience:

Job experience, under the supervision of a licensed architect.

  • Exam:

Clearing a 7 part licensing exam, each exam completed on different aspects of the profession.


Salary of an Architect:


Usually, the salary of an Architect increases with experience in this field. One can expect a starting salary from Rs. 4 Lacs to Rs. 5 Lacs per annum. With the experience of more than 5 years, one can expect a salary of Rs. 8 Lacs to Rs. 10 Lacs per annum.


Scope of an Architect in India and Abroad

Architect career is a fast-growing and challenging profession. There are various job opportunities for Architects in the designing and construction fields. 

There is a demand for good architects in interior designing, urban development, and construction. 

Like a piece of music, there are many little subcultures within Architecture, everyone can boom in an Architect career using their talents and skills.

But prominent architects may face competition if the number of Architecture degrees increases above its current level.

Qualification required to become an Architect

Architecture courses are a combination of engineering topics, arts, and technology. There are many courses in the field of Architecture at different levels. On the completion of the course, candidates can also register for the Council of Architecture (COA).


Diploma Courses:


  • Candidates must have completed class 12 with Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects with 50% of aggregate marks in board exams.

  • For other diploma courses, 10+2 is the minimum requirement.


B.Arch:


  • B.Arch is the most popular program in the field of Architecture.

  • Students should have completed class 12 with Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects with 50% aggregate marks in board exams to pursue the B.Arch course.

  • Students who have completed a 3-year diploma after class 10 can also apply for the B.Arch program.

  • Most of the colleges also require students to clear Architecture entrance exams such as JEE Main and NATA. For IITs, one should qualify JEE Advanced.

  • Private universities may conduct their Architecture entrance exams.


PG and Doctoral Degrees:


  • For PG and Doctoral Degrees candidates must have completed B.Arch Program.

  • Candidates are also required to clear PG entrance exams like GATE and CEED.


Skills required to pursue an Architect career:


  • Architecture aspirants must have good observation skills, memory, and problem-solving skills.

  • The base requirement for this field is good drawing skills and creative thinking.

  • It is also essential for an Architect to understand the needs and design requirements of the clients.

  • Candidates are also required to possess some IT skills to operate the software used for designing and architecture.
